This jacket is a return, and it's a U.S. Navy 37J1 leather jacket loosely based on the jacket worn by Ernest Borgnine in the movie "Torpedo Run" from 1958. Borgnine's jacket had a number of details slightly different than historically accurate 37J1 jackets, and this jacket has those details. A second jacket will replace this first attempt for the customer in a better fit.

The jacket is a little wider than what John usually wears, mostly in the chest and shoulders. The leather is a light sheepskin, with beautiful natural grain, and the lining is one of our new cotton fabrics from a wonderful source. The knits are a strong and sturdy wool in seal brown. One fun detail is the vintage 1943 United-Carr chrome-plated snaps.

Usually, 37J1 jackets have snaps in the front of the knit collar, and a two-piece back, but this jacket has no snaps, and a single-piece back, which the Archer Sloan jacket has. The collar is higher in the back, too. Some 37J1 jackets have pockets as low in the front as this jacket does. Also, as with the movie jacket, this jacket has six buttons in the front, rather than five, and we've seen one example of a vintage 37J1 which has six buttons in the same manner. Gussets were requested in the design.

The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1", with a chest of 43" to 44.5", and a weight of about 185-210 pounds.
