Several years ago, we began making 'Combat Clone' A-2 jackets. These are made to look as if they were assembled during WWII, with the
sewing and leather showing imperfection as so many originals show. Almost all reproduction A-2s are made with such a high level of
perfection, they end up not really looking like vintage A-2 jackets, which is ironic, as we love the look of WWII jackets worn by the
airmen of that period.
Making a great vintage-effect jacket isn't easy. The imperfections in sewing during WWII were the result of speed, rather than poor abilities
by the sewer. Workers were quite good, probably better than most modern reproduction sewers because of volume, but they were
paid per item, so they sewed as fast as they could for the profit speed gained. As a result, sewing on the jacket
looked a bit messy, but in the pressure of war, no one cared. Delivery of goods was more important than quality of goods. Originals
show great variation with imperfection, and we try to go with a subtle but believable amount of it.
The aging process is quite complex, involving a number of instruments. As with imperfect sewing, a reasonable amount of aging is applied
that would emulate common areas of wear. Photography tends to over-emphasize the aging, but in person, it's really quite amazing.
Why have jacket that looks like an original? That's a good question! What we find is that people who buy 'Combat Clone' jackets are
not just happy with them, but extremely happy. It's like having a veteran from WWII, but you won't hurt a historic and very limited
item of value. Original A-2s are fragile and disconcerting to wear, but reproductions will take all the abuse of everyday wear and only look better,
while causing no anxiety that history is being degraded. Also, almost no one wears a reproduction hard enough to show this kind of wear, so
a modern A-2 would possibly take 70 years to look like this. Why wait, if you don't have to? A jacket like this will be confused with a WWII
original...you'll see.
This is an extremely accurate copy of an Aero 21996 A-2. The Horween horsehide is solid, but very comfortable to wear, and has wonderful
coloring. The snaps are vintage United-Carr Line 24 ring snaps, made in 1943.
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'11" to 6'1", with a chest of 42" to 44", and a weight of about 180-205 pounds.
