We have had this original Cable Raincoat A–2 jacket in our collection for years. We decided to re–build
the jacket by replacing all the cloth parts, and it is now a very wearable original. The lining was
replaced with cotton material of the exact same shade, and the knits are also identical to original Cable
Raincoat jackets with a dark russet shade.
The jacket can be worn without fear of damaging it. The jacket is a solid unit, and the leather, which is somewhat thick, will
stand wear with ease. The finish has some fuzzy friction wear in places, but the abrasions are superficial, and will not give
the wearer trouble. The back sleeve pieces have some areas with scars (literally from the horse, not from wear to the jacket),
but those scars are shallow and will also be fine with regular wear. Though we would like to say we hit every original stitch
hole, that is virtually impossible when re–building original jackets. It looks plenty clean, though, in the stitching.
Originals of this contract had Conmar or Kwik zippers, and we've used a very sturdy WWII Conmar. It works extremely
well. We've also used a reproduction Cable 10008–P label. Most jackets of that contract were made with goatskin,
but we've seen samples of this contract made with horsehide. The body's collar snap halves were replaced in the original
holes, and so are both sides of the throat clips. When looking at thread on the inside the jacket, not bleached by light, the
reddish tone is identical to our reddish thread used in this jacket.
The color tone of the leather could be cleaned up with Pecard's leather conditioner. We have done nothing to the leather, so it
retains a very worn look to the original semi-aniline finish, but some conditioner would certainly give a more unified
color tone.
