On occasion, we come across some amazing originals. This jacket is one of them, and is a very large size 44. This jacket is in near-new condition, with only a little sign of any wear. The jacket dates to 1960-1962. The two contractors for Navy jackets at the time were Irvin B. Foster and Ralph Edwards (formerly Cagleco Sportswear), and this one is an Edwards. They were produced in Philadelphia, PA.

The condition is quite exceptional. All the leather parts are solid, flexible, and as-new. Some panels are thinner than others, as to be expected with vintage Navy jackets. The color is quite even. The nylon lining is in new condition, and the knits are superb, with only a tiny hole in one cuff by the leather. The zipper runs perfectly, mouton is fantastic (unfaded), and the thread is as-new throughout the jacket.

The fit is long in the torso and sleeves (more akin to a size 46), and the shoulders quite wide. It has that classic V-shape that Navy jackets are known for from this era. This is the exact same contract which the Kennedy family used on the ship Honey Fitz (we can see a number of them). JFK's jacket sold for nearly $600K. If one Googles JFK wearing his G-1, a darker mouton collar G-1 with V-shape of this contract is plainly seen. Here's his jacket as it was sold.

One particularly interesting detail of this jacket is that the maker's markings of where to place the pockets and collar buttons are still evident. This is extremely rare among originals we've handled. Note that the collar buttons are not close to where the markings intended they should go, and we don't know why.

We have the full specifications of this contract series and many others, and we're including the first two pages. It's interesting that jackets made before the 7823A series could be produced with the contractor designing the jacket (based on accepted details), but by this point, the Government was supplying the patterns to the contractors, and they were to be strictly obeyed, as noted in the spec.

The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'11" to 6'2", with a chest of 42" to 44", and a weight of about 180-210 pounds.
