We've done that work, and the jacket is a great wearer now. This is a very rare pre-55J14 model that Star Sportswear made, so the label shows no company name or contract number. L.W. Foster did the same. These tiny contracts were issued most likely in 1947, and as with both contractors, these jackets are identical in every way to the bigger contracts that came later. The zippers are the earliest form of Conmar offered in 1947. We have owned several from both companies. This jacket is in great shape. The leather is dense and solid, with no areas that are weak. The grain in goatskin from this period just isn't seen any more - it's literally beautiful. The leather also has a pleasant tanning smell. The lining is great, with only a few holes by the neck, and one by the inner pocket, but nothing that should be worried about. The waistband is original and in great shape, and we replaced the cuffs. The new zipper is a repro Conmar with vintage Conmar slider. The label was installed off-center and at an angle, and we did not tamper with it. We only use vintage mouton from the 1940-1960 era, and this mouton that we applied looks just like typical Navy mouton of the period. Note that no USN stencil was applied to the collar. They were most likely not ready for this small contract. No patches or name tags were ever applied to the jacket.
