This is an original M-422A by Edmund T. Church, and it's in very wearable condition. The jacket came to us with no cuffs, so we replaced them, and the jacket shows aging and wear, but is quite suitable to being worn. The goatskin is solid except for the shoulders, which show some cracking to the goatskin, but we have had no trouble with the shoulders at all. Only the surface has the cracking, and we've worn the jacket enough to know that it's not going to give more trouble.

The rest of the jacket is in exceptional condition for its age. The waistband has some darning, but nothing that would warrant replacement, and the lining is in wonderful condition. The mouton is great as well. The original zipper is olding up just fine. The jacket has s sweet smell of the original tanning chemicals, which is pleasant. No label was present when received, so we installed one of our Church reproduction labels, which is an exact copy of the originals.

Edmund T. Church was a large wartime clothing contractor for the Navy (also making M-69F Naval bridge coats), and during the war, they changed their name to Burjac Sportswear, continuing with their same design details with AN-J3A and later G-1 jackets. Their jackets have always been large for the tagged size, and this jacket matches several size 42 Church originals that we've owned.

The Church M-422A has a number of interesting details. Note the gusset placement on the sleeve—it is sewn over the sleeve, rather than the sleeve being over it. The body seams have the front panels rolled over the back along the seams. The pocket flaps are rather tall, and the zipper leather tabs are very slender, like the Monarch M-422 tabs. Original Church jackets could have either brown or burgundy rayon linings.

This jacket will ideally fit a person who is 5'10" to 6'1", with a chest circumference of 43-44", and weight of 185-210 pounds.
