This jacket was made to test the integrity of our Reece 104 button hole sewing machine, back in
July of last year. We chose a heavier cowhide to see if the machine would sew well enough. It did great,
and this jacket gave us confidence that other heavier hides would be OK, too.
Though the button holer worked great, since making this jacket, we've had to do many, many adjustments on the
Reece 104 to get it working as it should, and have found that there are about 30 parts to the machine
which can be adjusted. Even the cutting blade can be moved in every possible direction.
The pattern is taken directly from an original Californian jacket in size 44. This exact pattern is
what Bruce Willis wears in the movie Surrogates. His jacket is an original (though some think it's a
modern reproduction...it is definitely an original). We have several Californian jackets of differing
designs, but some features remained the same.
We usually use a Californian label on these jackets, but for this one, we used one of a thousand vintage
labels we now own. We've bought a production sample book from the late 1940s, and it's full of amazing labels,
with this being one of the more subdued ones. But we like it.
The leather is grainy, heavy, but extremely comfortable. It looks great, and will only look better as the jacket
is used. The fit is very comfortable.
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1" with a chest of 43-45", and a weight of about 185-205 pounds.
