In preparation for a customer's order, we've made a first test sample of a Pancho Barnes cross-zip jacket. We've used images
of her wearing that iconic jacket to get the details and shape, and this is the first test of it. This jacket was only worn during the
photo session, so it's in new condition, and the jacket is quite comfortable.
The leather is dark seal horsehide by Horween, has an aniline finish, and will show edge-wear. The leather is soft, but dense, so it has good
weight. It's not stiff like some of our other choices. The lining is a rose colored viscose-acetate, quite sturdy, and the thread is a matching
reddish cotton.
The button holes are made with the old-world German format of welted holes. Images of her wearing the original show the button holes to be done
in this manner. The epaulets don't have holes, and from photos, it looks as though the epaulets are flatly sewn against the body of the jacket,
as our epaulets are done.
Pancho Barnes was quite affluent in her earlier flying career, and had most likely commissioned the jacket she wore with her own design. We've
never seen any other jacket like it, and for the right price, a leather garment company would gladly make exactly what she wanted. The
zipper placement is very unique, yet again something we've never seen in a cross-zip or moto jacket. It's a more radical design in the front,
which some will find pleasing, and some not, but it's certainly just like Pancho...unforgettable!
The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'11" to 6'1", with a chest of 42" to 44", and a weight of about 180-205 pounds.
