This jacket was made as a test of the new button holer we just received. This new machine is a modern example, and is vastly superior to anything we've had before. Our two Reece machines weren't able to button hole some thinner, softer leathers, including this very format of sheepskin. The new machine button holes all the leather we have, with almost no adjustments. Also, the new machine will allow for holes close to seams, whereas the Reece machines would skip stitches if close to a seam.

This jacket has superb button holes throughout, and it was a huge relief. The older machines would require an hour or more of adjustment, and even then, some button holes wouldn't be ideal. This machine took all of two minutes to perform all the button holes on this jacket. We often pine for the quality of older equipment, but in this case, older button holers suck, and the new ones are superb.

This jacket has very grainy sheepskin (not the typical hide we use for A-1s) which will age well, and have a vintage look. The leather is butter-soft, and has a lighter weight than horsehide. The lining is a heavy cotton twill, and the buttons are horn.

We believed that some originals were made with the sleeves having cut-edge triple-stitched seams, which we created before, but have since realized that the original A-1, seen in "Suit Up! The Flight Jacket" has replaced sleeves. The sleeve/body joint is far messier than anything that would be seen on a typical original. That jacket is a Gordon & Ferguson A-1, and sleeves would have a top stitched seam matching the line of the back yoke.

The jacket would ideally fit someone in the range of 5'10" to 6'1" with a chest of 42-44", and a weight of about 185-205 pounds.
