Type A-2: I. Chapman & Sons

Good Wear 21996 Type A-2 Jacket » Russet goatskin I. Chapman & Sons

This Type A-2 is our copy of the historic Isaac Spiewak A-2 contract. This company is still producing uniforms and fashion wear in New York, as they have since 1904. Their A-2 contract had a distinct pattern, and was made only in goatskin. We have copied every nuance of their pattern, from the square shoulders, to the body seams facing opposite of most other A-2s.

This pattern has a comfortable body in the chest and waist area, and slender sleeve ends. The shoulders are roomy and square. The collar has a small profile, and has strong points to the tips, with a collar hole cut low in the front of the body. It stays below the wearer's chin.

Their A-2 contract was made exclusively in goatskin—I. Spiewak & Sons had been making goatskin civilian jackets in the 1930s and 1940s under the name Golden Fleece, so goatskin was nothing new to their production crews. We have a 1941 Golden Fleece motorcycle jacket in our collection that has butter–soft dark russet goatskin. Most of the leather they used in the A-2 contract was also dark russet in color, though some variation can be found among originals. They used a tan cotton lining and mid-brown to dark brown knits as well.

Most Spiewak A-2s had small ring snaps in the collar and pockets, but a small number of their A-2s were made with ball–stud snaps in the pockets. We have only seen this done in Spiewak jackets. We decided to copy this unique trait, rather than use only ring snaps in the jackets.

Isaac Spiewak had other family members who started United Sheeplined and Bronco Mfg. Co. They have a rich history of making garments for the Army Air Forces in WWII.

Details of this contract:
  • seal or dark russet goatskin
  • comfortable body design
  • inset sleeves and slender sleeve ends
  • epaulets sewn on top of shoulder seams
  • body seams facing opposite of most A-2 designs
  • collar with fine points and low front
  • ball stud and ring snaps in combination
  • Talon and Crown zippers are found on originals
This pattern is an athletic and sharp looking A-2 design, with a unique collar shape.
