M-422: Monarch Mfg. Co.

M-422 Monarch Mfg. Co. Jacket » M-422 Monarch Mfg. Co.

At some point in 1940, the U.S. Navy switched from using the cloth 37J1B jacket to a new goatskin leather intermediate flying jacket, called the M-422. This new series was contracted out to three companies: Willis and Geiger, Switlik Parachute & Equipment Co. and Monarch Mfg. Co. We build a copy of Monarch's M-422 contract. This pattern has a very common-sense look, but has details that aren't seen on other USN jackets of the M-422/M-422A series.

Some unique details include a back belt that has double stitching, an inner pocket that is offset in the lining, rather than in the leather facing of the lining, a Ligne 20 inner pocket snap (other USN jackets used larger Ligne 24 snaps) and very slender zipper tabs on each end of the waistband. Monarch is also known for placing the wind flap around an inch above the leather tabs at the base of the zipper, and for having a seam in the middle of the lining back, which they did on later USN contracts as well. The collar is proportionately large.

The Monarch M-422 has a typical torso shape overall. Monarchs should be fine for most body types.

Our copy of this contract emulates each detail of the original Monarch M-422 jackets. We have sourced excellent chrome-tanned goatskin, a superb viscose rayon for the lining, rib-rack 100% wool knits, carefully selected period vintage mouton in several shades of brown, and an eact copy of the woven contract label.

Details of this contract:
  • seal goatskin
  • comfortable body design
  • comparatively large collar
  • vintage period mouton (not modern reproduction)
  • black USN stencil on back of collar
  • viscose rayon lining in burgundy, as seen on original Monarch M-422 jackets
  • rib-rack 100% wool waistband which is accurate for this contract
  • pockets lined with heavy brown cotton
  • offset inner pocket with heavy white cotton lining
  • exact copy of Navy buttons
  • blackened brass M-40 bell Talon zipper
